This women’s day, BLACK+DECKER redefines how women #ScrewItUp

Created and conceptualised by Schbang, the campaign uses witty wordplay to shatter stereotypes

Bangalore (Karnataka) [India], March 10: BLACK+DECKER, a part of Stanley Black and Decker, global leader in hand tools and power tools, launched the #ScrewItUp campaign on the occasion of International Women’s Day. The campaign aims to screw the stereotypes surrounding women’s effective use of tools.

While women are more independent than ever, men are still believed to be more capable of household chores involving using tools. Whether it be fixing a light bulb or putting together some furniture, women are perceived as less-than-handy for the job and will most likely end up screwing it up.  Using this insight cleverly, the campaign redefines what it means for women to #ScrewItUp when it comes to hardware tools.

Created and conceptualised by Schbang, the campaign consists of a 30-second film where a woman is seen assembling furniture at home while her husband walks in and says he would do it himself as she would only screw it up. She proves him wrong by assembling the shelf with help from BLACK+DECKER’s BD40 cordless screwdriver and sarcastically responds, “Screwed it up.”

The campaign really put the last nail in the coffin of the existing stereotype around women not being able to use tools.

On the conceptualisation, Sushant Vithaldas, Business Head, Schbang Bangalore said “For Women’s Day, our goal was to showcase the familiarity and comfort around a Do-it-Yourself approach to basic home improvement which are often overlooked or underestimated for women at home. Our campaign goes beyond simply breaking down these stereotypes. IMS Ghaziabad (University Courses Campus) Urges Government to Prioritize Basic Research Funding for Technological Advancement

Ghaziabad (Uttar Pradesh) [India], March 10: The Union Budget for 2023-24 has allocated a significant amount of ₹16,361.42 crore for the Ministry of Science & Technology. However, a closer look reveals that the allocation has increased by only 15% from the previous estimate, and the Ministry had seen a decrease of 3.9% between 2021-22 and 2022-23. Scientific institutions in the country may face limitations in their absorptive capacity in the absence of significant funding increases across departments, warns IMS Ghaziabad (University Courses Campus).

The Department of Science and Technology (DST) received a boost with an allocation of ₹7,931.05 crores. It went up 32.1% from the previous year. However, the Department of Biotechnology (DBT) and the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR) received a hike of 3.9% and 1.9%, respectively. This lack of significant funding raises across departments may hinder the country’s technological advancement and innovation capabilities.

IMS Ghaziabad (University Courses Campus) urges the government to prioritize research funding for technological advancement. While initiatives to scale up the technology to produce laboratory-made diamonds, develop dedicated centres of excellence for artificial intelligence research, and establish a research centre for sickle cell anemia are commendable, none of the budgetary allocations suggests a significant scale-up of basic research.

According to the Global Innovation Index, India spends only 0.7% of its GDP on research and development. The other developed and advanced countries spend over 2% of their GDP on R&D. As one of the world’s largest producers of scientific literature, India must increase the size of the funding pie and ease the procedures to make the most efficient use of it.

“Research and evolution play a key role in the country’s technological advancement and innovation capabilities. The government must increase funding for basic research to build the country’s scientific infrastructure and attract top talent,” said Dr. Arun Kumar Singh, Director of IMS Ghaziabad (University Courses Campus).

Dr Ana Beatriz Lopes de Sousa Jabbour, Professor of Supply Chain Management for Sustainable Development, EM Normandie Business School, France discussed the issues of Sustainable Supply Chain in the Permacrisis Era on the 4th day of IRC whereas the issue of Digital intelligence in the age of artificial intelligence was addressed by Dr Sunil Mithas, Professor, Muma College of Business, University of South Florida, USA on day 5 of IRC.

On the valedictory day of IRC, Dr. Sanjay Dhir, Associate Professor and Area Chair of Strategic Management in the Department of Management Studies, Indian Institute of Technology Delhi addressed the audience on Re-thinking Digitization and Sustainability. The session urged the audience to consider a sustainable and innovative approach to all issues and challenges.

With this SCMHRD closed the deliberations and unveiled the themes for the Annual research conference.
