New Delhi (India), March 7: Goa is the synonym for happiness and fun. People from all walks of life come to relax on the white-sand beaches and enjoy the nightlife. But away from the shimmering lights and clean streets, in the shadows, a sordid trade in trafficking young women is thriving. No one can stop it. And if anyone is foolish enough to try, he puts his life at risk. A Virus on the Beach, written by Subhuti Anand, exposes the harsh reality of Goa’s sex trafficking industry, which government reports confirm is now the biggest in India.

Two young trafficked women, one from Nagaland and one from Nepal, meet a British tourist on the beach during the pandemic lockdown and seek his help in escaping their grim fate. Sucked into a world of criminals, gangsters and female escorts, the tourist finds himself taking increasingly desperate measures, including violence and killing.

Subhuti Anand is a former political journalist who worked in the British House of Parliament. He came to India in 1976 to meet the controversial mystic Osho, then known as Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh. In March 2020, Subhuti chose to remain in Goa during the nationwide lockdown imposed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to combat the coronavirus pandemic. Defying the curfew, Subhuti walked every morning on Candolim beach, and there he met two young women from North East India who had been working in a spa hotel in Calangute. It was their story that inspired Subhuti to write the novel, A Virus on the Beach. Through the book, he wants to draw the world’s attention to the way thousands of women are trafficked in India by gangs who enjoy near immunity from prosecution. It is a work of fiction reflecting a brutal reality.

The audience comprised 1000 young women from various walks of life and age groups. The age groups were 13 years to 20 years, schoolgoers, college goers, medical students, students studying pharmacy, and physiotherapists. The doctors also distributed 25000 sanitary napkins to educate the audience on how sustained hygiene and lifestyle contribute to defeating diseases that have impacted mortality in the past. The talk show was led by Dr Anagha Zope, Breast Cancer Surgeon, Marengo CIMS Hospital, and Dr Mona Shah, Gynaecology Onco-Surgeon, Marengo CIMS Hospital.

 Breast and cervical cancers are posing a significant disease burden and a growing concern for the nation. Socio-economic factors coupled with lack of screening, low awareness, associated stigma, and taboos remain obstacles to early screening. The talk was an interactive one aimed to spread increased awareness on menstrual hygiene, cervical cancers in women, breast cancers, prevention of cancers, lifestyle conditions that are contributory factors in cancers, vaccines for cervical cancers, early detection, and early treatment for cancers in women.

Dr Anagha Zope, Breast Cancer Surgeon, Marengo CIMS Hospital says, “The talk aimed at addressing the young women population to educate them to adopt healthier lifestyles to reduce their individual risk of getting breast and cervical cancers. We have a diverse society where women have access to information, but most of the information is unauthenticated. This prevents them from taking appropriate decisions. India is at a stage where we are witnessing very high incidences of breast cancer. Our western counterparts have also witnessed high incidences. But what differentiates the western population is while mortality due to breast cancer is reducing in the western population, it is on the rise in the Indian population. It is inadequate to just spread awareness. Most importantly, we need to implement appropriate action to catch the disease early in women, control mortality, and reduce deaths due to this. The event proved to be fruitful and impactful as it provoked the thoughts in the young women audience on hygiene, health, and the social aspect of each of their responsibility as individuals.”

 Dr Mona Shah, Gynaecology Onco-Surgeon, Marengo CIMS Hospital says, “The highly interactive town hall talk yielded a good understanding of cancers in women. But India still has a long way to go in surmounting challenges such as the size of the population, penetration in rural areas to create increased awareness, mindsets to surmount shame and hesitation of going to doctors, and self-examination as an educated exercise. With Oncologists taking up the responsibility of community outreach and educating the more proactive younger population, we are confident of bringing fatalities down.”

According to the Global Cancer Observatory (GLOBOCAN) estimates, there were 19.3 million incident cancer cases worldwide for the year 2020. India ranked third after China and the United States of America. it is further predicted that cancer cases in India would increase to 2.08 million, accounting for a rise of 57.5 percent in 2040 from 2020.  Breast cancer has risen by 13.5 % and cervical cancer by 9.4% in the year 2020. Among all cancers, breast and cervical cancers are in third and fourth positions and the top two cancers in women. It would require meticulous planning, monitoring, and evaluation of cancer control activities to win over cancer in any region.

Guwahati: For the fifth term NDPP leader Neiphiu Rio on Tuesday took oath as the chief minister of Nagaland.

Rio was administered the oath of secrecy by Nagaland Governor La Ganesan.

TR Zeliang and Y Patton were sworn in as the deputy chief ministers of the state, while other members of the Rio cabinet also took the oath.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home minister Amit Shah, BJP president JP Nadda and Assam chief minister and NEDA convenor Himanta Biswa Sarma were among those present on the ocassion.

The NDPP and its ally-BJP won a total of 37 seats- 25 with NDPP and 12 with BJP in the 60-member assembly during the recently concluded Nagaland polls.

Rio will lead an all-party opposition less government, even as the NDPP-BJP alliance secured 37 seats in the 60-member house in recent assembly polls in the northeastern state.

One of the biggest strengths of India’s IT industry is its vast talent pool. Indian IT professionals have made a name for themselves not only in IT and technology hubs like Silicon Valley but across the globe. The knowledge, skills, experience, exposure, and delivery of Indian IT professionals are unlike any. A career in IT is considered a highly rewarding one, and not surprisingly, the field of IT is among the most preferred ones in India. A recent news report showed how an Indian software giant has offered to hire professionals at half the package they were originally offered. Bhojpuri Dabanggs in action

Trivandrum (India), March 7: Bhojpuri Dabanggs, which represents the Bhojpuri film industry in the Celebrity Cricket League (CCL), has made it to the semifinal of the popular league by comfortably defeating the Bengal Tigers on Sunday.

Bhojpuri Dabanggs’ captain Manoj Tiwary won the toss and decided to field first. Put in to bat first, the Bengal Tigers were all out for 59 in 9.5 overs thanks to a superb bowling performance by their rivals.

The Bhojpuri Dabanggs team responded with a score of 116 for 5 in the allotted ten overs, with Pravesh Yadav top scoring with 57 and Aditya Ojha contributing 30 runs.

Bengal Tigers came up with a better performance in the second innings of 10 years by scoring 105 runs for the loss of just two wickets. Captain Jisshu Sengupta played a gem of an inning by scoring 68 runs in just 30 balls. Needing just 49 runs to win in 10 overs, Bhojpuri Dabanggs reached the target in just over six overs. However, the team lost five wickets in the process. The win meant Bhojpuri Dabanggs booked their spot in the semi-final.

Bhojpuri Dabanggs captain Manoj Tiwary was the best bowler, while his counterpart Jisshu Sengupta was the best batsman. Bhojpuri Dabanggs’ Pravesh Yadav was named the man of the match.

“I am very happy with the way the team played. The bowlers did an excellent job to restrict Bengal Tigers to just 59 runs in the first innings. Our batters, too, responded perfectly with a big score in the first innings. The Bengal Tigers team put up a great effort in their second innings, but we were always confident of winning. We are glad to have made it to the semifinal and are confident of reaching the finals and lifting the winner’s trophy,” said Manoj Tiwary, Captain of Bhojpuri Dabanggs.
