From passion to purpose

New Delhi (India), March 3: Coming from a simple middle-class background, Manjunath always wished to have a pet dog as his companion. But he could not make it happen because of the space crunch and affordability.

Guwahati: For the second consecutive term, the National Democratic Progressive Party(NDPP) and its ally Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) retain power in Nagaland by bagging 37 seats in the 60-member state assembly.

The NDPP supporters came out and started celebrating after the result was declared on Thursday.

The Congress, which governed the state for many years till 2003, had contested in 23 seats but drew a blank once again.

The NDPP candidates won 25 seats, eight seats more than the 2018 polls while BJP secured 12 seats, a similar number of seats the saffron party bagged in the last assembly polls (2018).

The Nationalist Congress Party secured six seats, National People’s Party led by Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma managed five while Lok Janshakti Party(Ram Vilas), Nagala People’s Front and Republican Party of India (Athawale) bagged two seats each,Janata Dal (United) one and Independents got four seats.

Top NDPP leader and Nagaland’s longest serving Chief Minister septuagenarian Neiphiu Rio is also set to assume office as chief minister for a fifth consecutive term as his party along with ally BJP retained power in the northeastern state.

The NDPP and BJP, which contested the election in a 40:20 seat sharing arrangement,before the elections had announced that if voted to power, Rio would remain the Chief Minister.

The Nagaland Assembly polls were held for 59 of the 60 seats on Monday when 85.90 per cent of the state’s 13.16 lakh voters cast their votes.

Talking to reporters, Nagaland chief minister Neiphu Rio said, “We are sure of our winning because in last five years our government have done lots of work for the progress of the state. We thanked to the people of Nagaland for voting in support of us,”.

Guwahati: The BJP retained power in Tripura for second consecutive term winning 32 seats in the 60-member state assembly, the result which was declared on Thursday.

The BJP supporters celebrated their win in Tripura by bursting crackers.

The tribal-based Tipra Motha Party (TMP), which for the first time contested the assembly election in 42 seats on its own, became the second single largest party securing 13 seats.

The CPI-M won 11 seats while the Congress won three seats. The CPI-M led Left Front, which contested the elections in a seat sharing deal with Congress, has put up 47 candidates allotting 13 to the Congress.

The candidate of BJP ally Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura (IPFT) won the Jolaibari seat in southern Tripura.

In the February 16 elections to the 60-seat Tripura Assembly, 89.95 per cent of the 28.14 lakh voters exercised their franchise and will decide the fate of 259 candidates, including 31 women.

In the 2018 assembly polls, the BJP got 36 seats and its ally bagged eight seats while the CPI-M secured 16 seats.

“We are happy that for the second consecutive term, BJP has won elections in Tripura. For last several years, the people of Tripura was oprresed under left regime now, we can take breath in fresh air,” said a BJP supporter.

Tripura, which was fortress of Left party, but the people of the state has overthrown the left regime completely. In 2018, for the first time Left was badly defeated in the hands of BJP.

This time, Left and Congress had formed an alliance to contest against the BJP, but they could not performed well.

New Delhi (India), March 2: Jijau Sanstha’s founder Nilesh Sambre, his colleagues and project-affected citizens have taken the path of hunger strike against the administration for the justice rights of the project-affected farmers and the underprivileged in Palghar district on Tuesday, February 28, at Collectorate Palghar. Along with the civic facilities announced by the government, workers of many social organizations and many citizens of the Palghar district spontaneously participated by giving their cooperation.

Palghar district is the confluence of all three: Sagari, Nagari and Parvat. Maharashtra is known as the district of tribals, as the tribal population predominantly inhabits these hilly areas. Being the district of tribals, many projects have been brought in this district under the tribal remedial scheme. However, till now, everything still needs to be completed, or it is still in incomplete condition. Taking advantage of the ignorance of tribals here, To date, they are deprived of their remuneration and facilities. Even today, despite the construction of many dams in this district, the local people are deprived of water.

On the contrary, there is no employment for the citizens here, and some projects still need to be completed. These include Surya-Dhamani-Kavadas Dam, Lendi and Kharkhar Dam, and Wagh Project.  , Tulachapra, Pimporna and Dhasai, and Deharje Dam must be mentioned against this. Jijau Sanstha founder Nilesh Sambare and his colleagues have started a fast unto death at Collectorate Palghar against the injustice being done to the project victims and local citizens.

Guwahati: Meghalaya chief minister and NPP chief Conrad Sangma on Thursday called Union Home Minister Amit Shah and sought his support and blessings in forming the new government.

Sangma won the South Tura constituency with 10,090 votes. He defeated his rival Bernard Marak of the BJP.

The NPP chief reached Shillong and held a meeting with its party MLAs to decide on a post-poll alliance.

NPP is likely going to form an post poll alliance with BJP. They were in allince with BJP in Meghalaya but this year they don’t agree in pre poll alliance with BJP and decided to contest single.

The results of the assembly elections held in Meghalaya will be announced soon and the National People’s Party (NPP) has emerged as the top performer with 16 seats won and 9 seats leading.

On the other hand, BJP national prsident JP Nadda has advised the state unit of BJP, Meghalaya to support the National people’s Party in forming the next government in Meghalaya. 

The Indian National Congress (INC) has won 4 seats and leads in 1, while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has won 0 seats and leads in 3.

“I thanked the people for voting for our party. Right now we have not decided anything lets see what happened,” Conrad Sangma told reporters.

The NPP’s impressive performance has been attributed to its strong campaign and the support of the people. The party’s leader, Conrad K Sangma, expressed his gratitude to the voters and promised to work towards the development of the state.

Meghalaya poll held on February 27 and 85.17 voter turnout was witnessed during the voting. A total of 21.75 lakh electors cast their ballots.
